SmartTimes

An Android app that helps children learn multiplication and division tables through short practice rounds, quizzes and collectable rewards.

Overview

SmartTimes: Multiplication App is an educational Android game for practising times tables 1–10 and the matching division facts, with addition and subtraction up to 20 as well. Each topic follows the same loop: study the table, practise it, face a boss round and earn a badge.

Platforms: Android

Problem

Memorising times tables takes a lot of repetition, and repetition is easy to abandon. SmartTimes turns that practice into short, rewarding sessions that a child can do independently.

Who it's for

Children learning times tables (the listing targets 2nd and 3rd grade) and their parents.

Key features

  • Multiplication and division tables 1–10, plus a mixed mode that combines the tables you choose
  • Addition and subtraction from 1 to 20, with larger ranges planned
  • Learn first, then practise: study each table before being tested on it
  • Boss rounds and animal badges that reward finishing each topic
  • Five lives that recharge every five minutes, so sessions stay short and focused
  • A custom on-screen number pad and an owl character that gives hints
  • Available in English, Bulgarian, French, German, Japanese and Chinese
  • No account needed; progress is saved on the device
  • Extra lives through an optional rewarded video or an optional in-app purchase

My role

Built the app for the Kabinet Vyara practice. It is published on Google Play under Radoslav Radoslavov.

Technology

React Native, Expo, TypeScript, Zustand, On-device storage (AsyncStorage), RevenueCat, Google AdMob

Challenges & trade-offs

  • Lives that keep recharging while the app is closed: on return, the app works out how many lives were earned in the meantime instead of relying on a running timer.
  • Question sets that are complete and predictable. For addition and subtraction, every page is built from the full set of matching equations, shuffled and repeated to reach the number of questions needed, so practice covers everything without random gaps.
  • Saved progress that survives updates: stored state is versioned, so outdated progress can be reset without ever touching a child's remaining lives or a purchase.
  • Six languages from the start, using a small custom translation layer where every visible string has to exist in all six.
